Questions to ask before you volunteer
A few questions up front prevent disappointment on both sides.
About the role
- What exactly will I be doing? Ask for a short description of the role.
- How much time is expected, and how flexible is it?
- Is there training, and who gives it?
- Who will I report to?
About safety and rules
- Is there a background check, application or orientation? These are common and normal.
- Are there safety rules or protective equipment?
- Is volunteer insurance in place? Ask what coverage applies if you are hurt or cause damage.
About the organization
- What does the organization do, and who does it serve?
- How is volunteer time used, and what difference does it make?
- Is it a registered nonprofit? In the United States you can search for charities on the IRS tax-exempt organization search to check status.
For you
- Can I try it first? A trial shift is a good way to see if it fits.
- Will you verify my hours? Students and others may need a record.
- Can I get a letter of reference afterward?
If it is not a fit
It is fine to say so politely and look elsewhere. Organizations would rather hear it early than lose a volunteer without notice.
