How to find volunteer opportunities near you
There is almost always a need nearby. The hard part is finding the one that matches your time and interests. Start with these places.
Search sites
- VolunteerMatch and Idealist list opportunities that you can search by place and cause.
- Catchafire matches professionals with nonprofits for skills-based projects.
- National organizations often list local branches, such as Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross and food bank networks.
Your community
- Call or visit local organizations whose work you care about. Many do not advertise openings online.
- Ask your library, school, place of worship or city hall.
- Dialing 211, where available, connects you to local community services.
- Check your local parks department for clean-ups and stewardship days.
Choose well
- Match the cause. You will stay longer with something you care about.
- Match your time. Be honest about what you can commit.
- Match your strengths. A skill you already have can be worth more than a pair of hands.
- Start small. Try one shift before committing to a role.
What to expect
Many organizations ask you to apply, attend an orientation or pass a background check, especially where children or vulnerable people are involved. This is normal and protects everyone.
